Gift For Childrens Ward

A new Fabian Therapy Continuous Positive Airways Pressure (nCPAP) machine has arrived onto the Children’s Ward of Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital thanks to the Drogheda Rotary Club. The Rotary Club donated over €11,000 for the purchase of the essential piece of equipment which is used to help the breathing of acutely ill babies.

This new machine allows for safe and smooth respiratory support for neonates and paediatrics up to 30 kg. and it has many features and improvements on older models.  It is  easy to use, and is particularly silent as noise can upset the babies.  Also the Fabian nCPAP is mobile, upgradable and has flexible communication interfaces.  These features are at the cutting edge of technology for treating acutely ill children.

Ms Heather Murphy, Clinical Nurse Manager 2, said  “ We are delighted to have this piece of new equipment funded by Drogheda Rotary Club.  The Fabian machine  is an essential piece of medical technology for small babies who have developed respiratory issues and complications.  The Fabian Therapy helps babies breathe on their own and it keeps them off a ventilator.  This machine helps the children recover more quickly and it means a child does not have to go to Dublin and treatment is delivered here locally.”

Training of the staff is underway in preparation for the winter when respiratory problems are more frequent.

Mr Robert Taylor, President of Drogheda Rotary Club, was delighted to present the machine to the Children’s Ward in the Lourdes Hospital.  He said “Drogheda Rotary Club is well pleased to be able to help the Children’s Ward with the purchase of this new advanced piece of equipment.  This kind of engagement, which benefits sick children in our community, is part of the Rotary ethos and encourages us to continue with our work”.

The Drogheda Rotary Club enquired in January if the Club could be of assistance to the Children’s Ward.  A number of different proposals were suggested.  Although the Fabian Therapy nCPAP was the most expensive request the officers of the Drogheda Rotary Club decided to proceed with the funding of this high value piece of equipment.
